When you think of summer adventures in Alberta, soaking up the sun next to a lake might not be the first thing that comes to mind. While Alberta isn’t famous for its beachside living, it’s still home to over 80 different lakes and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water this summer. Here are three of our favourite lakeside activities to inspire you to get out and spend some time on the water.
It’s easy to think that hanging out at a lake is all about sitting on the beach and doing nothing, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. A lakeside holiday allows you to enjoy beach activities like volleyball, frisbee, building sand castles, and wading. If the water isn’t calling your name that day, you can also take in a great hike, go for a bike ride, or host an awesome cookout or bonfire at your site. The lake really offers the best of both dry land and aquatic life without having to go to two separate sites, so try and pick activities that everyone can enjoy to get the most out of your time near the water.
Enjoy the Main Attraction on a Boat
Enjoying the beach is a lot of fun, but getting out on the water opens up different and exciting opportunities to enjoy the water and it’s depths. If you’re looking for a new way to enjoy your favourite site, getting out on the water is a good way to gain some space and new perspective. Whether you’re fishing, wake boarding, or camping out under the stars on the deck of your vehicle, enjoying the lake on a boat is definitely something that’s worth trying at least once this summer.
If you own your own boat, make sure you’ve purchased insurance for your aquatic vehicle. You’ll want to make sure that your boat, trailer, and boating equipment are covered. Avoid headaches from unexpected damage and ensure that you’re covered before heading out on the highway or on the lake.

Kick Back and Relax—Without Your Cellphone
While the idea of locking your cellphone away may seem like an impossible task, spending at least one of your trips out to the lake without your device can be extremely relaxing. After all, you’re spending some time with your family and friends, so be present and spend that time with them, rather than your phone or tablet. Aside from emergencies and directions, try to limit the amount of time you spend lying in your beach chair checking Instagram and Facebook. Instead, pack your sports activities (see point one above!), or that pile of books you’ve been meaning to read, or some flip flops and your swimsuit to take a dip in the water. Summers are short, so dedicate the time to enjoying them—without any digital distractions.
